April 2026 Update: The April 15, 2026 tax deadline is here. The IRS has been releasing refunds every business day. If you filed in January, February, or March, your refund may already be in your account or is on its way. Use the steps below to check your exact payment status right now.
What the 3 IRS Refund Payment Status Messages Mean
- Return Received: The IRS received your tax return and it is being processed. No action is needed. This status appears within 24 hours of e-filing or 4 weeks of mailing a paper return.
- Refund Approved: The IRS finished reviewing your return and approved your refund. Your projected direct deposit date is shown here. Funds typically arrive 1–5 business days after this status appears.
- Refund Sent: The IRS released your refund to your bank. Expect the deposit within 1–5 business days. If funds don’t appear after 5 days, contact your bank. If your bank account information was incorrect, the IRS may need to reprocess — call 800-829-1040.

Important: No More Paper Refund Checks
The IRS has phased out paper refund checks in 2026. If you did not include valid bank account information on your return, the IRS may temporarily freeze your refund and contact you for banking details. Ensure your routing number and account number are correct to avoid delays.
