How to Track Your 2026 IRS Tax Refund

Method 1 — Where’s My Refund? (IRS Website)

  1. Go to IRS.gov/refunds.
  2. Click Check Your Refund and enter your Social Security Number (or ITIN), tax year 2025, filing status, and exact refund amount.
  3. Click Submit to see your current status and deposit date.

Method 2 — IRS2Go Mobile App

  1. Download the free IRS2Go app (iOS or Android).
  2. Tap Refund Status.
  3. Enter the same details and tap Check Status.

Method 3 — Automated Phone Hotline

Call 800-829-1954 (available 24/7). For live agent help, call 800-829-1040, Monday–Friday, 7 a.m.–7 p.m. local time.

IRS Refund Status Messages — What They Mean

  • Return Received: The IRS has your return and is processing it. Allow up to 21 days for e-filers and 8 weeks for paper filers.
  • Refund Approved: Your return was reviewed and approved. Your direct deposit date is shown here. Funds typically arrive 1–5 business days after this status appears.
  • Refund Sent: The IRS released your refund. Expect it in your bank account within 1–5 business days.
  • Any other message: Your return may need additional review, identity verification, or correction. The IRS will mail you a notice with instructions.

Important: No Bank Account on File?

Since paper checks are discontinued, if you filed without providing bank account information, the IRS will send a CP53E notice asking you to update your banking details. Once updated, your refund will process within 2–5 business days. You may also receive your refund via a prepaid debit card or digital wallet.
