No Bank Account? What Happens to Your Refund

Since the IRS has phased out paper checks, taxpayers without bank accounts should be aware:

  • If no bank information is included on your return, the IRS will temporarily freeze your refund and send a CP53E notice requesting updated bank account information
  • Once updated, your refund will be processed within 2–5 business days
  • Alternative options include receiving your refund via a digital wallet or prepaid debit card (such as a Visa or Mastercard gift card)
  • If your bank rejects the deposit, the IRS will notify you and work to reissue the refund

How to Track Your Direct Deposit Status

  1. Go to IRS.gov/refunds — Where’s My Refund?
  2. Enter your SSN/ITIN, select tax year 2025, choose your filing status, and enter your exact refund amount.
  3. Click Submit to see your current status and deposit date.

Also available: IRS2Go app (free, iOS/Android) and automated hotline 800-829-1954 (24/7). The tool updates once per day, usually overnight. Check status 24 hours after e-filing.
