The IRS began accepting 2025 tax returns on January 26, 2026, and has been processing refunds every business day since. The agency has now fully phased out paper refund checks — direct deposit is the only standard method for receiving your federal tax refund in 2026.

These dates are based on the standard 21-day processing window and are estimates only. Actual deposit dates vary by individual return and financial institution. EITC & ACTC Refund Calendar 2026
Due to the PATH Act, all refunds claiming EITC (Earned Income Tax Credit) or ACTC (Additional Child Tax Credit) were held until February 15, 2026. The first EITC/ACTC direct deposits were released on March 2, 2026. For filers who submitted their returns in March or April, here is the updated EITC/ACTC calendar:

Common Refund Delay Reasons in 2026
- Missing or incorrect information on your return (wrong SSN, income mismatches)
- Incorrect bank routing or account number — the IRS will freeze the refund if the deposit fails
- No bank account information on file (paper checks are no longer standard)
- Claiming EITC or ACTC (PATH Act hold until mid-February)
- Return flagged for fraud screening or identity verification
- Outstanding federal debt (the IRS may apply your refund via the Treasury Offset Program)
- Late or peak-season filing (after March 20, 2026)
How to Track Your 2026 IRS Refund Status
- Visit IRS.gov/refunds — Where’s My Refund? tool.
- Enter your SSN/ITIN, select tax year 2025, choose your filing status, and enter your exact refund amount.
- Click Submit to see your status: Return Received → Refund Approved (with date) → Refund Sent.
