The IRS has opened the 2026 tax filing season on 26 January 2026 and has begun accepting federal income tax returns for the 2025 tax year. Taxpayers filing their tax returns are wondering about their tax refund dates. You can find the direct deposit dates and other information here.
IRS Direct Deposit Payment Dates 2026
The IRS started the 2026 tax season, and the agency urges taxpayers to use the e-file process to speed up the process instead of a paper return. The federal government issued Executive Order 14247 to move to electronic payments from paper payments. Following that order IRS has phased out the paper tax refund checks on 30 September 2025.

Due to the phase-out, most taxpayers will need to provide their account information to receive the tax refunds directly to their bank accounts. Hence, if you are filing for the 2025 tax return, you will mostly receive it through direct deposit. The IRS processes the tax refund to direct deposit of the taxpayers within 21 days of filing the tax season.
So, based on the 21-day timeline, you can expect your 2026 tax refund on the following direct deposit dates based on your tax filing:

When can you expect your tax refund if you can claim ACTC/EITC?
If you have claimed or will claim the ACTC/EITC tax credits with your 2025 tax returns, you can expect your tax return to get delayed due to the PATH Act restriction on your tax refund. Under the PATH Act, the IRS cannot process the tax refund before the mid- february of the tax season.

The restriction allows the agency to review the tax return in time and ensure there is no fraud in the tax credits claims, and only those people receive it who actually need it. So, if you filed it with your tax return at the start of the tax season, you can expect your tax refund to be processed on your account or debit card by 02 March 2026.
The tax refund with EITC/ACTC date is for those whose tax return has no issue; some may receive it early after mid-February, due to their financial institution. So, do check your tax refund on the IRS tool.
What if you do not include your direct deposit information on the 2025 tax return?

- The IRS has made the direct deposit mandatory for the 2026 filing season, but it may have some exceptions. To save the taxpayers from any problem, the IRS has informed them to open a bank account for the tax refund process.
- So, if your tax return has no account information, the IRS will temporarily freeze your tax refund and inform you via a CP53E notice to update your bank account information in the IRS records. Once you update the account information, your refund will be processed in 2 to 5 days.
- If you do not have the account, you can also receive the tax refund through other options – a digital wallet or debit cards.
- If your bank rejects your refund, the IRS may not immediately issue a paper check, and the IRs will ask the taxpayers to exclude some reject codes.
How can you track your 2026 tax refund direct deposit?
If you have filed the tax return, you can track your tax refund through the IRS online refund tracking tool – Where’s My Refund within 24 hours of e-filing. You can track your 2026 IRs tax refund in the following steps:
