Yahoo Data Breach Settlement: Eligibility, Benefits & How to claim?

Yahoo data breach settlement against Yahoo and Yahoo! Canada Co. claims periods will soon end on 27 December 2024. The class members of the Yahoo Class action settlement can check settlement details from here and submit their claim to receive the settlement benefit. 

Yahoo Data Breach Settlement

A lawsuit was filed against Yahoo! And Yahoo! Canada Co. in the Ontario Court of Justice due to the multiple data breaches between 2013 and 2016, which led to risks to the personal information of the users. The lawsuit claims that the company failed to protect the user’s account and their information which led to the possible risk of money loss and fraudulent activities. 

The first breach on Yahoo occurred in 2013, the second in 2014, and the third breach in 2015 & 2016, the company notified the users about the breach on 14 Dec 2016, 22 Dec 2016, and February 2017, respectively. The defendant denies the violation of law or any unlawful activity but agrees to settle the case with $20,325,683.58.

The Ontario Superior Court has approved the settlement and the settlement administrator has begun the claim form process under the Court authorization. Eligible Canadians can submit the claim form by the deadline of 27 December 2024, the claim form period has begun from 27 May 2024. 

What makes you eligible for the Yahoo Data Breach Settlement?

The Canadian residents who meet the eligibility requirements will be a class member of the Yahoo data breach settlement:

  • You have a Yahoo account during the class period 01 January 2012 and 31 December 2016. 
  • You have not opted out from the settlement which will make you ineligible for the settlement. 

Yahoo Data Breach Settlement Benefits

The Defendants Yahoo! And Yahoo! Canada Co. have paid the settlement fund of $20,325,683.58 to the settlement administrator, which will be first distributed to cover the following expenses before distributing it to the class members with valid claim:

  • Settlement administration expenses and costs, 
  • Legal Fees and expenses
  • Taxes
  • Honorariums for Plaintiffs 
  • 10% levy to the Ontario Law Foundation

After deducting the above expenses from the settlement, the administration will distribute the net settlement fund among the valid claimants. The Yahoo data breach settlement offers the benefit in three categories based on the user’s inconvenience due to the multiple data breaches. 

Here is the net settlement fund distribution in the settlement benefit categories:

  • Category A claims: The A category claims offer cash reimbursement for out-of-pocket losses, up to 25% reimbursement of Paid User costs, and 25% small business user costs. According to the agreement, the category claims offers $4 million to pay for the claimants. 
  • Out-of-Pocket losses: The reimbursement for out-of-pocket losses will be determined by the administration. The loss includes identity theft, monetary loss, falsified tax returns, etc. The misconduct due to data breaches counts only when it happens within four months of notice of data breaches. 
  • Paid User costs: It is for people who were paid users of Yahoo, such users have to present proof of being the paid user to receive the settlement.
  • Small Business User Costs The small business user who uses the Yahoo service and pays for the email services during the class period with a cap of $500 per year. 

In the category Claim A, the class member can get the maximum payout of $25,000. 

  • Category B claims:  The Category B claims involve the class members who have not claimed the Category A claims and invested their time in resolving the issue caused by the Data breaches. The class members will receive $25 per hour for each hour spent dealing with the data breach. The class members should note that the payment will not exceed $125 in the category B claims. 
  • Category C Claims: The class members who qualify for Category B can claim Category C claims with respect to the credit monitoring services for a minimum of one year. 

How to claim Yahoo Data Breach Settlement? 

The  Yahoo data breach settlement class members who wish to claim the settlement can file their claim online in the following ways:

  • The class members can visit the settlement website https://www.yahooclassaction.com/ 
  • Access the claim form with their Notice ID and confirmation code sent in the notice. 
  • The class members should submit the claim forms based on the category claims on the website with the valid documents required for each category.

The administrator will review each person’s claim category-wise based on their eligibility, the administrator will pay the settlement payout based on their eligibility. The class member will get notified about their claim form approval through email, mail, or telephone. 

When will you receive the Yahoo Data Breach settlement payout?

The claimants will receive the payout based on the category claim they have filed. According to the settlement agreement, the valid claimants and credit monitoring services claims will be processed after the claim period ends and the claims are resolved.

The claim period ends on 27 December 2024, and the process of sending the claims payment will take at least 6 months or a maximum of a year’s time, so be patient class members. The settlement administrator will disburse the amount for Paid USer costs, Out-of-pocket losses, Small Business USer costs, and other alternative compensation through electronic payment methods or by direct deposit in the claimant’s bank accounts. 

The administrator will send the info on the process of activating the credit monitoring services claims payments after they review and approve your claims. 

The Yahoo data breach settlement claim period will end by the end of 2024 on 27 December 2024, so if you qualify for the settlement, you must submit the claim form before the deadline.
