When Will I Get My EITC Refund 2026? Updated Schedule & Up to $8,046 Explained

Update (March 31, 2026): The PATH Act hold lifted on February 15, 2026, and the IRS began releasing the first EITC refund direct deposits on March 2, 2026. If you filed in January or February and claimed EITC, your refund should already be in your bank account. If you filed in March or later, your EITC refund is still being processed — see the updated schedule below for your estimated deposit date.

For tax year 2025 (filed in 2026), the maximum EITC is $8,046 for taxpayers with three or more qualifying children. Even if you owe no taxes, you can receive the full EITC as a refund.

How to Check Your 2026 EITC Refund Status

  1. Go to IRS.gov/refunds — the official Where’s My Refund? tool.
  2. Enter your Social Security number or ITIN.
  3. Select tax year 2025 and your filing status.
  4. Enter the exact refund amount from your return in whole dollars.
  5. Click Submit to view your refund status and projected deposit date.

The tool updates once daily (usually overnight). You can also use the IRS2Go app (iOS/Android) or call the automated hotline at 800-829-1954.

Note: The Where’s My Refund? tool will not show EITC status until after February 15 (when the PATH Act hold is lifted). Before that date, it may only confirm that your return has been received.

Why Is My EITC Refund Delayed?

  • PATH Act hold: All EITC refunds were held until February 15, 2026 by law.
  • Additional IRS review: Some returns are selected for fraud prevention screening.
  • Identity verification: The IRS may mail a letter requesting you verify your identity.
  • Errors on your return: Income mismatches, wrong SSN, or missing information cause delays.
  • Peak season (March–April): Higher filing volumes may slow processing times.

If your refund is more than 21 days late after e-filing (or more than 8 weeks after paper filing), call the IRS at 800-829-1040 (Monday–Friday, 7 a.m.–7 p.m. local time).

Still Need to File? EITC Deadline is April 15, 2026

If you have not yet filed your 2025 federal return, the deadline is April 15, 2026. You can claim EITC even if you owe no taxes — it is fully refundable. Use IRS Free File if your income is $79,000 or below. Need more time? File Form 4868 by April 15 for an extension to October 15 (taxes owed are still due April 15).
