Back in 2022, a class action in the Circuit Court of McDonough County, Illinois, alleged that the company had violated the BIPA by collecting biometric data from students without proper consent; after that, Google removed this case to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in April 2021.
In August 2023, the court agreed to the plaintiffs’ motion to remand the BIPA Section 15(a) claims back to McDonough County Circuit Court. And then in July 2024, Google agreed to a settlement of $8.75 million without accepting any wrongdoing.
The deadline to opt out and object to the $8.75M Google biometric privacy settlement is September 1, 2025. Each individual who meets the eligibility requirements is hereby notified to submit the claim form; the deadline is October 16, 2025.
Who can submit a claim form?

- You must be a resident of the United States and live in Illinois;
- You used Google Workspace for Education between March 26, 2015, and May 15, 2025, while you were enrolled in the school; and

How much can one get?
If you submit an $8.75M Google biometric privacy settlement by the due date, you will get a payout between $30 and $100. Note that out of the total fund, around 30% will be deducted for the administrative costs and attorney fees.
Note that the remaining $6.125 million will be distributed among all claimants. If the number of claimants is high, the payout amount will be very little. If the number of claimants is below the expectation, the average payout amount will be high.
