Washington $9,000 Rebate
A new $45 million state program that Governor Jay Inslee announced on Tuesday, April 23, will make driving electric vehicles (EVs) more affordable for a large number of Washingtonians.
Eligible residents who purchase or lease an EV will receive an instant rebate of up to $9,000 toward their purchase. In August 2024, the Washington $9,000 Rebate will be available.
The program’s specifics were released on Tuesday by state Department of Commerce Director Mike Fong and Governor Jay Inslee. It will be offered at car dealerships starting in August.
The $9,000 incentive may be used as a point-of-sale refund for new EV leases lasting three years or more, according to state representatives. For two-year leases and new EV purchases, a $5,000 refund is offered.

Washington EV Instant Rebates Program Amount
Washington officials unveiled a $45 million initiative on Tuesday to lower the cost of electric automobiles for the state’s low-income citizens.
The Washington $9,000 Rebate offers incentives to qualified buyers and lessees of new and used electric vehicles right when they make their purchases or sign lease agreements. Residents who make up to $45,180 for an individual or $93,600 for a family of four are eligible for the offer.
In the revised scheme:
- A $5,000 discount is available for purchases or two-year leases on new EVs, while a $9,000 incentive is available for leases lasting three years or more.
- For purchases and rentals of used EVs lasting two years or more, a $2,500 incentive is available.
The initiative is scheduled to begin in August and last until June 2025, or until financing runs out. Between 6,500 and 8,000 refunds are anticipated by Commerce. Offer valid on cars priced at $90,000 or less.
How the Washington $9,000 Rebate will work?
Consumers will visit a dealer to learn about state fast rebate low-cost leasing offerings. The dealer will get a signed pledge that the customer satisfies program income criteria and has a credit score suitable for a lease contract.
The dealer subtracts the rebate from the lease cost and adds dealer, state, and municipal fees to calculate the lease amount. The state’s zero-emission cars exemption of up to $15,000 in lease payments exempts the automobiles from sales tax.
Example: A dealer advertises a three-year lease for $239 per month with $1,999 required at signing for $10,364 ($1,999 + $239 x 35 months). State EV Instant Rebates of $9,000 reduce the lease cost to $1,364 for qualified customers.
The dealer adds $500 leasing costs, $200 paperwork fees, and $734 state and local transportation, title, and registration fees, totaling $2,798, or $78 per month over 36 months.
Washington $9,000 Rebate Eligibility
Replacing gasoline-powered cars with electric ones is a top aim in the state’s Democratic-led efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and move away from fossil fuels.
Washington residents who lease new electric vehicles for three years or longer may be eligible for a refund of up to $9,000 if they are single and makeup to $45,180 yearly, or if they are a family of four and make up to $93,600.
Even while the number of EVs in the state has almost quadrupled in the last two years, most of them are costlier versions, and the Seattle region is home to a disproportionate share of these vehicles. According to Inslee, the goal of the new initiative is to “democratize” newly developed automobile technologies.
They might also be eligible for a two-year lease or a $5,000 down payment on a brand-new electric vehicle. There is a $2,500 incentive available for both purchases and leasing of used electric cars.
EV charging stations across the state
EV infrastructure expenditures include the $85 million for over 5,000 additional charging stations in multifamily housing sites, places that are open to the public, and neighborhoods that are particularly sensitive to the negative health effects of air pollution.
The Climate Commitment Act (CCA) provides funding for around $116 million of this activity, which fights climate change, lowers prices, and creates employment across the state of Washington.
This announcement was made in February. King County had an Earth Week ceremony earlier in the day to promote its electric vehicle fleet and to announce a $5.8 million grant from Commerce that was made possible by the CCA.
