April 2026 Update: The federal tax deadline is April 15, 2026. Millions of refunds have already been processed. Check your refund status now using the steps below. Paper checks have been discontinued — all 2026 refunds are issued via direct deposit.
How to Check Your IRS Tax Refund Status in 2026
The IRS provides three free tools to check your refund status for tax year 2025:
1. Where’s My Refund? — IRS Website
- Go to IRS.gov/refunds.
- Click Check Your Refund and enter:
— Your Social Security Number (or ITIN)
— Tax year: 2025
— Your filing status
— Your exact refund amount in whole dollars - Click Submit.
2. IRS2Go Mobile App
Download the free IRS2Go app from the App Store or Google Play. Tap Refund Status and enter the same details.
3. Automated Phone Hotline
Call 800-829-1954 (available 24/7, no hold time for the automated system). For a live IRS agent, call 800-829-1040, Monday–Friday, 7 a.m.–7 p.m. local time.
When Can You First Check Your Status?
- E-filed 2025 return: 24 hours after the IRS accepts your return
- E-filed prior-year return: 3–4 days after filing
- Paper-filed return: 4 weeks after mailing
- EITC/ACTC filers: After February 21, 2026 (when the PATH Act hold lifts)
The tool updates once daily, usually overnight. Do not call the IRS unless Where’s My Refund? specifically instructs you to — the tool has the same information that phone agents see.
