April 2026 Update: The federal tax deadline is April 15, 2026. The IRS has been processing and releasing direct deposit refunds every business day since January 31, 2026. If you are still waiting for your refund, check your exact status using the guide below. If you haven’t filed yet, you can still submit your return today and receive your refund within 10–21 days via direct deposit.
Key 2026 change: The IRS has phased out paper refund checks. Direct deposit is now the only standard refund method for virtually all taxpayers. Ensure your bank routing and account numbers are correctly entered on your return to avoid refund freezes.
IRS Direct Deposit Refund Status 2026
Here is what to expect at each stage of the IRS direct deposit process:
- Return Received: The IRS has your return. Processing typically takes 10–21 days for e-filers.
- Refund Approved: Your return has been reviewed. A direct deposit date will be displayed — funds typically clear within 1–5 business days of approval.
- Refund Sent: The IRS has released your refund. Expect the deposit in your bank account within 1–5 business days. If it doesn’t appear after 5 days, contact your bank.
