When can you track your NYS tax refund status?

When you file your state tax return to the NY Department of Taxation and Finance, it goes through various stages of processing. The processing timing of the state tax return depends on the way you have filed, how complex your return is, and the refund payment method you have selected.

Some tax returns can be processed faster, while returns with certain credit claims can take time due to the additional review to mitigate fraud. The taxpayer can check their refund status through the refund status tracker tool, but the way you have filed your return will determine when you use the tool, such as:

  • You can track tax refund status within 72 hours of filing your state tax return electronically.
  • If you have filed the state tax return through mailing a paper return, you may have to wait for three to four weeks to check the refund status.

What does the NYS Tax refund tracker status information mean?

If you are tracking the tax refund status online through the refund tracker tool, you must understand what the status you see on the tool means. Here you can understand the status shown on the tool and its meaning:

  • Refund amount or SSN does not match: When the information you entered does not match the details in the system, this message pops up on the screen.
  • Return received: The department has received your return, and they are processing it.
  • Need further review: When your tax return requires further review, you will see this status. This happens when the state needs more time to process the requests. The department also needs additional information to process the return.
  • Request for information: If the department needs additional information, they will send you a letter within two weeks, and you must respond to it quickly to fasten your return processing.
  • Return Adjusted: When your return is processed, the refund amount is adjusted based on the information; such status will be shown on your screen.
  • Refund Issued: When the department issues your tax refund, the status will show “Refund Issued” status, and you can expect the direct deposit payment within 15 days.

What if the refund status tool is not showing any updates?

If your NYS refund status is not showing any updates, like you are seeing the same status for a long time, there can be many reasons, such as:

  • Your return is complex, and it is taking the department more than the usual time to review and process it.
  • Your return has some missing information that the department would need; you will receive the letter about it, and the department will guide you on the missing information.

However, if you do not see any update and have received no payment even after the “refund issued” status is shown on the tool, you should contact the department. But first, you should wait for 15 days and check with your bank account.

You can contact the department through the automated phone line, 518-547-5149, and ask about the missing refund.

When can you expect the NYS tax refund to process?

The NYS tax refund process depends on the way of filing and the payment method you have chosen, such as:

  • E-file returns with direct deposit can take 3 to 4 weeks to process, if there is no error in the return.
  • Paper Returns can take around 5 to 6 weeks or more to process.

The NYS tax season has begun; taxpayers who have filed the state tax returns can check the refund status through the refund tracker tool.
