The IRS has not announced the 2025 tax season commencement date yet, however, many people believe the agency will start accepting tax returns by the end of Jan 2025 as 15 Jan 2025 the IRS has set the deadline for the quarterly estimated tax payments of 2024. 

The IRS announces the tax season for the year in Jan, generally a week or two before the season starts. Since the 2025 tax season approaches fast, the agency urges taxpayers to prepare well to file their tax returns and check the credits, deductions, and all that they may qualify for and claim it with their tax returns.

The agency has a common deadline to pay the taxes before the tax day, 15 April 2025, however, the tax due date gets extended for the disaster-affected area. This year, the agency has extended the tax deadline for the disaster-affected areas recognized by the FEMA to 01 May 2025. The disaster-affected areas that have suffered due to hurricanes and storms in 2024, areas are – Alaska, Tennessee, West Virginia, New Mexico, Virginia, and others. 

Apart from this, taxpayers also get the deadline to file for extended tax returns till 15 October 2025. How to calculate your IRS payable taxes for the 2025 tax season?

Taxpayers preparing for the 2024 tax return can calculate their taxable income and taxes they have to pay easily through tax form 1040, or the following instructions:

  • First, you should identify your filing status for the federal tax return that you will be filing this year. 
  • Next, you should gather income and other resource details from the W-2 form or 1099 forms. The taxpayers should know they should also include their digital assets in their reported income. You can take the form 1040 and write down your income-related details. 
  • Next, you should check if you qualify for any credits and if yes, you should mention in it your form. You should also look for any deductions and all that would help you calculate your gross income.  
  • Once you have your gross income for 2024 deduct the deductions you qualified for to receive the taxable income. 
  • Once you get the taxable income check the 2024 tax rates to see in which tax bracket you fall to pay taxes.   • VITA assistance: The elderly citizen who needs assistance in filing their tax returns can take VITA assistance from the IRS to file their taxes.
