Eligibility for the VA Clothing Allowance 2024

A veteran would be eligible to receive the VA clothing allowance if he or she meets certain conditions concerning his or her service-related disability.

  • The service-connected disability must be a result of the veteran’s active military service.
  • Prosthetic or orthopaedic appliance: Because of the prescribed prosthetic or orthotic appliance worn or used by a veteran, the appliance damages his or her clothing. 
    • Examples include wheelchairs, artificial limbs, and leg braces. Generally, soft and flexible devices, such as elastic stockings, do not fall under its provision.
  • Skin condition: The veteran shall have a skin condition that has been found to be connected to service, that requires treatment with medication that permanently damages outer garments.
  • Multiple appliances or conditions: If a veteran has more than one clothing allowance authorised by virtue of multiple qualifying prosthetic appliances, orthopaedic appliances or skin conditions, he or she shall be granted separate clothing allowances.
  • Clothing damage: Damage to clothing shall be shown to be directly caused by the prosthetic or orthopaedic appliance, or the skin medication.

VA Clothing Allowance Amount 2024

The amount of the VA clothing allowance Depends on the level of the veteran’s disability and the relevant costs related to clothing the VA categorises various levels of disabilities for competitive pricing. For 2024, the regular allowance amount is $999.51.

  • It is paid to amortise the cost of replacement of clothing damaged as a result of the use of prosthetic or orthopaedic appliances or by the use of skin medications for service-connected conditions.

Factors Affecting Amount Paid:

    • Level 2: Veterans with more serious or moderate disabilities would receive a medium subsidy.
    • Level 3: Veterans with extremely severe disabilities would be granted the highest subsidy possible.

2024 VA Clothing Allowance Benefits Increase

Veterans can expect a 3.2% increase to their overall VA benefits in 2024. It is directly linked to the annual Cost of Living Adjustment, as determined by the Social Security Administration.

The COLA aims to curb the impact of inflation on benefit spending power.
