In South Africa, SASSA is providing more than 19 million permanent grant payments on a monthly basis. The older persons grant beneficiaries are going to receive their monthly grant payment on Tuesday, March 4, 2025. 

The deadline to replace the Sassa Gold Card with the new Postbank Black Card is 20 March 2025. It is expected that grant increases will come into effect on 1 April 2025, and adjustments can range between R10 and R90 per grant.

The agency currently provides more than 19 million permanent grants like the Older Persons pension grant, grant-in-aid, disability grant, war veterans grant, care dependency grant, child support grant top-up, foster child grant, and child support grant.

SASSA Payment Amount for March 2025

The payment amount that SASSA currently pays to its beneficiaries isn’t the same for all. SASSA Grants are basically designed to provide financial assistance to cover the daily living expenses of the qualifying residents of South Africa. How can you collect your SASSA payment in March 2025?

The SASSA grant payment can be transferred to beneficiaries’ preferred payment amount receiving method. Following are the available SASSA payout delivery options. 

  • Bank Account: Permanent SASSA grant applicants can get their grant amount directly into their bank account. This is the fastest, smoothest, and most reliable payment-receiving method.
  • Retail outlets: Sassa grant amounts can be paid into the selected stores around beneficiaries. Some prominent retail outlets are Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Boxer stores, Usave stores, OK, and Checkers.
  • Mobile cash pay points: SASSA beneficiaries can also collect their grant amount through mobile cash pay points. This is not a flexible grant payment receiving option because, through this method, individuals can collect their grant payments only for a few hours every month.

How long will the SASSA Gold cards remain valid?

The last date to swap your Sassa Gold Card into the new Postbank Black Card has been extended until 20 March 2025. The SASSA announced that all gold card holders need to replace it with the new Postbank Black Card before 28 February.

But if a beneficiary fails to replace or collect their new cards before 20 March, they will not be able to collect their grant amount. In other words, they will not be able to access their grant amount with their gold card.

According to the recent updates, Sassa grant beneficiaries will be able to apply for their Postbank black cards even after 20 March. Only if any circumstances occur then the beneficiaries can access their grant through alternative methods, like visiting Post Office branches, before 30 June.

How can you apply for a Postbank Black Card?

  • You need to dial *120*218*3# with the help of your cell phone. 
  • After that, press option 1.
  • After listening carefully, select your province from the available options.

After that, individuals need to visit the qualifying retail route to replace their Sassa gold cards. Qualifying retail routes are those where beneficiaries are currently collecting their grant payments. Some of the most prominent ones are retailers, including Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Boxer Stores nationwide, and Gauteng Pick n Pay stores.

  • Locate and then press the check status button.
  • Enter all the required details, such as ID number, cell number, etc.
  • After that, hit the check status button to view the current status of your SASSA grants. 

From when the SASSA Grants are going to increase in 2025?

Usually Sassa grants can increase on 1 April and 1 October of the year. So, it is expected that the first increase of 2025 will come into effect in April, and SASSA is going to adjust grant amounts to help individuals to cover the rising cost of living. It is also expected that the great increases range between R10 and R90.

But keep in mind that the exact increase amounts for 2025 are yet to be announced by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana. 

The grant increase announcement is scheduled for during the annual budget speech, which has been rescheduled for 12 March 2025.
