AISH Payment 2024 Eligibility
To be eligible for AISH payments in 2024, you must meet three main criteria set by the Alberta government:
Age and Residency:
- You must be at least 18 years old and not eligible for an Old Age Security pension.
- You must be a resident of Alberta and a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
- You cannot be currently residing in a correctional facility or a specific mental health facility like Alberta Hospital.
Medical Criteria:
- You must have a severe medical condition that is likely to be permanent.
- This medical condition must be the main factor limiting your ability to earn a living, not other factors like education level.
Financial Criteria:
- AISH considers your income and assets (yours and your spouse/partner’s) when determining eligibility.
- There is no strict income cut-off, but your assets cannot exceed a total market value of $100,000 (with some exemptions).
- Importantly, AISH encourages recipients to work to the extent they are able. Earnings from employment will not necessarily disqualify you from receiving AISH benefits.

AISH Payment 2024 Amount
The exact AISH payment amount for an individual in 2024 depends on their circumstances. However, here’s what we can tell you:
- Maximum Monthly Living Allowance: The Alberta government offers a maximum monthly living allowance of $1,863 to AISH recipients living in the community for 2024.
- Variations Based on Needs: This maximum amount assumes you meet all eligibility requirements and have no additional income sources affecting your benefit.
- Potential Reductions:
- If you cohabit with a partner with non-exempt income, your AISH payment might be reduced.
- If you reside in a government-owned group home, you’ll receive the maximum allowance minus a set amount for room and board.
- AISH Increase: The Alberta government announced a 6% increase to AISH benefits implemented in January 2024. This increase is intended to keep pace with inflation.
- Indexing: The AISH program is now indexed to the Alberta Consumer Price Index. This means future AISH payments may be adjusted annually based on inflation.
